Competition Format

1. Competition Structure

  • The competition is open to full or part time MBA Students.
  • All teams shall be composed of four members.
  • All communications from the organizing committee will be in English. The case to be analyzed will be in English and the teams will present in English.
  • A team arriving late at any stage of the competition may be disqualified.

2. Case Preparation

  • The case will be sent to registered teams on Friday March 9, 2012 at 8pm.
  • Teams will prepare their presentation using a PowerPoint template provided by the organizers and emailed with the case.
  • Teams are not allowed any external assistance while preparing the case, i.e. as of the moment the case is issued.
  • The presentation should not identify any business school or university. Failure to do so will lead to disqualification.
  • Teams must pick a name and use it to identify their presentations.
  • Presentations must be handed-in or emailed to the organizers on Friday, March 16, 2012 by 8pm.

3. Schedule Overview

  • Teams are invited to a brief cocktail on Friday March 16 at 8pm. Presentations can be handed-in at the cocktail. For the teams not able to attend the cocktail, presentations must be emailed to jean-olivier.dalphond@hec.ca.
  • Teams will be assigned the time of their first round presentation during a draw on Saturday morning.
  • All meals on Saturday March 17 will be provided.
  • Teams are strongly invited to stay in Montreal on Saturday March 17 for a diner in town and evening out in Montreal.
  • The HEC Sustainability Challenge is part of the Montreal Sustainability Weekend, which also includes the Business Beyond Tomorrow conference, hosted by Concordia’s John Molson School of Business and McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management. Teams are invited to attend the conference which takes place on March 18, 2012. More information is available at here.

4. Presentations

  • Presentations will be preloaded into the competition rooms.
  • First round: teams will make a 20 minutes presentation which will be followed by a 10 minutes question period.
  • The four finalists, before going to the second round, will be given 30 minutes to prepare a new question related to the case. Teams should carry their own computers for this preparation. Teams will not be allowed to access external assistance while preparing for this round. Teams will carry their presentation in a USB drive provided by the organizers.
  • Final round: During the final round each team will have a maximum of 20 minutes to make its presentation followed by a 10-minute question and answer period with the judging panel.

5. Evaluation

  • The team’s performance will be evaluated according to an evaluation grid for a total of 100 points.

6. Awards

The prizes for the winning teams will be:

  • First: 4,000$
  • Second: 2,000$
  • Third: 1,000$

7. Judges

  • The judges are selected by the organizers. Panels are constituted at the discretion of the Organizers and will include at least three judges.

8. Questions

  • Please make reasonable assumptions if necessary and cite them in your case analysis. Any questions regarding the case can be sent to jean-olivier.dalphond@hec.ca. Questions will be answered hours after the case is sent and sent to all participants.

9. Dress Code

  • The dress code for the competition is business professional.
